The world’s most famous department store sets the tone for an exclusive neighbourhood marked by luxury retail and residential ostentation
Harrods may be Europe’s biggest department store and its incredible size may indeed comprise a city in itself. But there is much more to Knightsbridge than the luxury grocer that is its most famous resident. The most expensive flat in the world lies across the road in a landmark contemporary building and is surrounded by a string of embassies and hotels whose Hyde Park aspects and highly ornate primarily Victorian architecture clearly indicates that this is an enclave of prodigious wealth. But exclusivity is not always conveyed here through scale and grandeur, Knightsbridge contains an enchanting warren of quiet lanes and hidden courtyards whose more intimate scale and character evokes an air of almost pastoral, albeit prosperous domesticity.
